Persian roundel fragment with woven plain ground remaining on upper right only.

Warp: Wool and linen pattern wefts on a natural linen. Slit tapestry technique with curved wefting and outlines twined in natural linen. 13 warp/cm.

Colors: Murex purple-red, natural ivory wool and natural ivory linen.

Designs: Large roundel with circular central medallion of an elephant wearing ankle bracelets and a saddle, bearing mahout with upraised arm and goad. An inner border in ivory with a narrow stripe pattern, joined by small and large roundels across a main border to a plain red outer band. The small roundels each center across and the large ones seated on highly stylised elephant. The reserves between are filled with pairs of doll-like human figures and circular elemnts with unidentifiable motifs, Outer most narrow band has small rosettes.
