Origin:
Egypt, Alexandria, Type: Fragment of a large 25cm. approx. roundel,
Period: 3-5th Centuries
Warp: Material: linen, tan, natural Spin/Ply: 5 spun paired Density:
38/in
Weft: Material: wool dyed dark brown, silk, ivory, natural Spin/Ply:
5 spun; Density: 80in.
Decoration/Surface: Technique: Slit tapestry with much curved weftings;
remains of balanced, 5 spun linen plainweave ground.
Remarks: Woven along with the ground on the loom rather than separately
and then sewn into a prepared hole. The roundel depicts a plant whose
stalk ends in a heart-shaped blossom and round branching flowers;
woven in the usual weft direction rather than warpwise- The presence
of silk indicates a high quality workshop |
